Architecture that cares for its surroundings

BioStone20 SNS® turns ceramic cladding into an active surface. Sunlight triggers a reaction that helps break down dirt, bacteria and certain pollutants in the air.

Rainwater then helps wash them away. That means fewer cleaning interventions, less maintenance and architecture that keeps its appearance better over time.

  • Self-cleaning action

Reduces the adhesion of organic dirt and makes it easier for water to wash it away.

  • Fewer odours

Breaking down bacteria and organic residue helps reduce unpleasant odours.

  • Pollutant reduction

Acts on certain air pollutants and turns them into harmless substances.

  • Antibacterial properties

The photocatalytic reaction helps break down germs and bacteria that come into contact with the surface.

  • Lasting performance

The technology is permanently built into the ceramic surface and remains effective despite wear.

What is a bioactive ceramic?

When light activates the material

BioStone20 SNS® incorporates Hydrotect photocatalytic technology. Its formula is based on titanium dioxide —TiO₂—, a compound that is activated by UVA rays and generates active oxygen on the surface.

This process means the material takes part in looking after the space instead of remaining passive.

The self-cleaning process

  1. 1. The sun activates the surface

When sunlight falls on the material, the photocatalytic reaction begins.

  2. 2. Dirt loses its grip

Active oxygen breaks down organic deposits, bacteria and certain pollutants into substances that are easier to remove.

  3. 3. Rain completes the process

The superhydrophilic surface makes water spread out into a thin film that washes away the broken-down dirt.
